Hey there, privilege haver, I need to ask you a question.  Why the fuck are you offended?  Why is it that when I point out when you did something homophobic, or misogynistic, or transphobic you feel you have the right to be upset about me pointing this out?  

Unless you get offended when someone informs you that you stepped on their foot, you need to shut up, and if you get offended when someone informs you that you stepped on their foot, there’s something wrong with you.

I think the fear of being labeled these things, the sense of upset, the sense of indignation that people get when called on their privilege is a tool of the kyriarchy.  We use extreme and blatant displays of prejudice to justify minor ones.  

“I’m not beating you up, so what I said can’t be homophobic”

“I think women should be allowed the vote, so I can’t be a misogynist” 

and so on and so fourth.  Society gives us these extreme, rare and blatant examples of prejudice and tell us that unless our experience lives up to that, we’re not really experiencing it.  

Having your words or actions equated to the vitriol spouted by organizations like Westboro Baptist Church is sure to get a rise out of anyone, and make them close their ears to whatever the person is saying, but the thing is, the hatefulness of organizations like Westboro Baptist Church isn’t what the main social problem is, the main problem is subtle and insidious and often subconscious.

So, basically the next time someone calls you out on your privilege or your prejudice, realize they’re not calling you the anti-christ, you said something fucked up, or did something fucked up, and that’s bad, but really seriously, you can apologize and fix it, and you should, because getting offended is how prejudice wins.

This is not meant to excuse your behavior, what you did was definitely wrong, but this is not something that should hurt your feelings.  This is something you can fix, just apologize, and read shit, because if you’re stepping on someone’s foot they should not have to explain how not to step on their foot.  

Natural does not necessarily mean healthy.

1. No Trigger Warnings On Fic: For the love of all that’s good, if you’re going to write about potentially triggering stuff (like rape, or eating disorders or whatever) FUCKING PUT A FUCKING WARNING ON IT!
2. Using eating disorders/self injury/abuse/etc for dramaz!: I have no objection to stories that include well written use of horrible things.  I’ve experienced horrible shit, and I sometimes include these experiences in my fiction, but the lack of understanding, the ignorance, and the generally crappy bathotic way these fics are written just pisses me off.  Other people’s pain is not yours to use to make your fiction seem edgy, not yours to use as a prop in your poorly thought out plot.  Not to mention that trauma/mental illness is often used as a way to make a character good n’ vulnerable for the romantic advances of another character (because that’s totally the way to start a healthy relationship).
3. Erases/White Washes POC Characters: So often in fanfic characters of color are dropped entirely, or their ethnicity forgotten, or there’s always what happened to poor Blaise Zabini after fandom found out he’s of African descent (almost no mentions in fanfic ever again).  
4. Believes That In Order To Be Submissive in Bed You Have To Be Weak: You know what really irks me about ukefication?  The assumption that in order to be a bottom you have to be weak, needy, clingy, and incapable of taking care of yourself.  I’m submissive and I will tell you, I am one badass mother fucker.  I run a business, take care of myself, and am (if you hadn’t noticed) assertive, opinionated and downright pushy about things I care about, and I am undeniably submissive in bed.  There are passive people who are dominant in bed and so on and so fourth.  Yeah…
5. Assumes That All Effeminate Men Are Gay:  You know James from Pokemon?  You know what the major argument against Rocketshipping (Jesse/James shipping) is?  The fact that James likes to wear women’s clothing (he likes it A LOT, if you didn’t notice).  Fandom assumes that wearing women’s clothing = gay.  Goddamnit, no.  James is a girly guy, he might be gay, he might be straight, he might be bi, or pan, or ace, or whatever, but his effeminacy has no bearing on his sexual preference.
6. Assumes All Gay Men Are Effeminate: I can’t even… just… fuck… goddamnit.  Guys, when a character comes out of the closet he does not immediately start getting pedicures.
7. Doesn’t Believe In Sexualities Other Than Gay and Straight: In fandom THERE ARE NO PANSEXUALS, BISEXUALS, OR ANY OTHER SEXUALITY THAT ISN’T TOTALLY GAY OR TOTALLY STRAIGHT!  Want to write a slash fic about a character in a straight relationship?  OMG they totally realize they’re gay and promptly dump their partner!  Could we maybe, maybe acknowledge that other sexualities exist, please?
8. Is Ableist As Fuck:  Fandom thinks that all disabled people are magical martyrs who need to be saved with someone’s MAGICAL PENIS (or the TWU WUV of an abled person) Yeah.
9. Believes Trauma Can Be Fixed With Sex: Fandom thinks that all trauma, and mental illness can be fixed with the power of TWU WUV! and sex.  I mean twu wuv is nice, but I’ll fix my own damn self thank you, and as much as I love genitals (as I’ve said here) they are not magic, and are not equivalent to SSRIs and years of therapy.
10. Believes All Sex Workers Are Abused/Forced Into It or Believes That Sex Work Is Super Easy and Hyper Glamorous: Sex work is… work.  It’s much like a job doing anything else, sometimes it’s great, sometimes it sucks, sometimes it’s coercive and exploitive and horrible, sometimes it’s not.  Most of the time it’s like “What do you want to order for lunch, oh shit my shift’s in five minutes” in other words LIKE EVERY OTHER JOB EVER.  Don’t even get me started on when it treats sex workers as lazy social parasites.
11. Believes Trauma Makes You Evil/Excuses Evil: Look, redeeming the pretty villain by giving them a “tragic past” is so messed up for so many reasons.  For one you’re saying that “trauma makes you a bad person” yeah, just think about the implications of that one. You definitely want to suggest that people who have bad things happen to them will become bad.  Secondly, the idea that trauma excuses evil is a big damn problem because it suggests that people who have bad shit happen to them have no free will anymore, essentially reducing them to a non-human status “oh, they’re just a survivor of gang-rape, they don’t know any better” Yeahhhhhh, go stand in the “I’m a shithead” corner until you can behave.
