Notes Question About Gendered Names For KidsIs it inherently problematic to give your kid a gendered name, due to the possibility they might be trans*? What if you give them a gendered name and have a couple of alternates (one for the other binary gender, and one that’s gender neutral) tucked away in case for later?

I see no harm in assigning a name that seems to fit a child at the time; I have friends both cis and trans who change their names for various reasons. Also, culture and history determine the genderedness of many names. Times can change!

If you have a gender neutral first name, you need a gender specific middle one. Here in Germany, that is.

Most trans* people seem to choose a different name even if their birth name is gender-neutral. It’s probably something to do with adopting a new identity. So even if you name the kid Alex, they might change it if they’re trans*.

a lot of gendered names have non-gendered nicknames or opposite gendered versions that could be acceptable for use if the kid in question wanted to use something based on the name their parents gave them.
